the one year soldier.
thursday well well. in a blink of an eye, 1 year has passed. 1 year in service in the army. it hasn't turned out as how i hoped it would but i can't say that it has been that bad as well.
looking at it, i guess i actually gained more. of course this is all said in retrospect. i would have felt otherwise at that point in time.
1 year on. the bunch of us in egarage have gone over many different paths. diverse and exciting as it may seem, we're still a bunch of good friends and i'm thankful for that. so here we are:
1 commissioned officer - combat engineer
1 officer cadet - infantry
3 third sergeants - intel, recce, artillery
1 sniper
1 rifleman
1 armor driver
2 police officers
much can be said about who's job is the easiest and all that but i think my hat goes off to fengnan for qualifying and then passing out of sniper school.
in any case, i never foresaw myself getting injured in NS. nobody did. i guess life has its own way of balancing things - we lose some, we gain some.
for instance, if it weren't for the injury, i wouldn't have been able to meet up with a certain person on the 23rd of december. nor would i have been able to know great pals like bertrand and james. i wouldn't have been able to do lots of things if it weren't for the injury and subsequent downgrade. a blessing in disguise? definitely.
i still hold grudges. not with the system but with the people. with the people who messed up my potential career, who pushed me to the ends of my limits in BMT (though in some ways i'm glad they did), people who basically were a pain. the lessons learnt and the experiences gained were and still are invaluable. the oath i took on the 8th of june 2006 - to defend singapore with my life - still holds true. and i'm proud of it. proud to wear the green uniform. to wear the green beret. with my LBV over my uniform and rifle in hand, i'll do whatever it takes. whatever it takes.
so here. 15 experiences in NS that have been unforgettable thus far:
1. being posted to Mohawk coy (Mohawk warrior...hmm..)
2. getting the chance to be platoon IC and then getting hell from my PC (unfairly or otherwise)
3. 24km route march. symbollic in every way
4. situational test with gary - my fellow spiderman
5. leading the 2 main missions for sit test and getting top marks for both
6. attaining m16 marksman
7. being assisgned SAW gunner in SISPEC (delta! delta! all the way!)
8. attaining p226 marksman
9. platoon fire movement with paintballs
10. being one of only 5 people in the coy to fire a 'live' MATADOR
11. seeing my target board "jump" up in the sky during M203 range - the one and only
12. getting posted overseas
13. meeting up with primary and secondary school classmates overseas
14. having a good laugh with my colleagues here thanks to airguns and a freaky spider
