wednesday night let's put it this way, if you think the laws in singapore are harsh and inhumane, then piss off. when you're in a foreign country, you are expected to abide by that country's laws and regulations, why should exceptions be made just because you're a foreigner?
everyone knows about michael fay - the teenage vandal who was caned even after then-president bill clinton had appealed. and then now, in canberra, i'm watching a show called "just punishment" talking about how an australian citizen (ngyuen van) was hung for drug trafficking in 2005.
also, such is the world of politics that politicians always want to link one non-related incident and/or event to another. case in point: with the execution of ngyuen round the corner coninciding with singapore airlines' bid for a lucrative air route between australia and the united states, politicians lobbied for then-prime minister john howard to dismiss the bid.
secondly, the lawyers that represented the australian (one who happened to be a queen's council), crossed the line when they criticized the judiciary system of singapore by insinuating that singapore finds suspects guilty before being found innocent. not only that, he went on to say that PM Lee "had the cheek to say on the day of van's execution that it was the implication of the rule of law". fuck off you self-righteous bastard. of all people i'd expect lawyers and most definitely queen's councils to accept the ruling of a court of law and to respect another country's judiciary system.
just because you're repentant after being found guilty in a court of law, that does not absolve you of the original crime committed and as such, the punishment sentenced should still be carried out, especially if one has committed a capital offense.
in any case, it's just too bad for any offender. you committed an offence, you pay the price. whether or not the death penalty is legalized murder is another issue. the point is, if one cannot accept the laws, the culture and the country as a whole, don't come. don't you dare criticize and be all self-righteous about another country's laws simply because one happens to be more strict than another (and rightly or in this case, justly so too). the world can do with less people whingeing about things that they cannot control or do not have a say in and less people who claim to be the know-it-all and see themselves as an example of a person of high moral values.
