all ahead full.

monday morning the weekend was a really good breather. 五月天's concert was really good. i think it's one of the better concerts i've ever attended, it was probably as good as coldplay's if not better. definitely better than snow patrol and the fray. i won't compare it to the eagles' concert though. it's just a different league altogether.

in any case, managed to do a little bit of touristy things in sydney this time round. wandered around darling harbour, the museum of contemporary art, some chocolate bars and explored a little bit of the newtown suburb.

now's a good 2 weeks plus of exams preparations and i sure hope it's not going to burn me out like last semester. i'm feeling fairly confident but well, one can't be complacent right?

hah!

thursday evening i can't say i'm very surprised that man utd lost. the manner in which they lost though, limp. it's like havig a flacid you-know-what in the face of the hottest girl in the world.

and am i the only one to find the pussycat doll's rendition of jai ho annoying? they make the whole song sound.. cheap. like a bunch of sluts trying hard to sell themselves to someone else. then again, i've never liked the pussies. ha. sorry. couldn't resist the dig.

reprieve.

thursday morning 2 goals 7 assists in 2 games. submission of my last 2 essays for the semester. impending submission of my semester-long project. barcelona v manchester united. a good 1 week break before i go full-steam ahead for my final exams and then...

done!

monday morning no more essays for the rest of the semester! i'm pretty pleased with my essays this semester. got two high distinctions and a distinction so far. i'm looking to score at least a distinction on my final essay that i'll be submitting later today. it should set me up nicely before the mad rush to study for the final exams.

the upside about starting my papers on the 16th is that i no longer have to do what i did last semester - wake up at 9 and burning through to 5 the next morning. i don't think i'm able to sustain it this semester so i shall not bother to try.

for now, time to rest!

wtf.

sunday afternoon attended the malaysian students' organization's "malam kenduri" last night. it was a miserable affair. for an event that's supposed to be the highlight of the year for mso, they kinda stuffed it up real bad. the emceeing was dull, the performances were dreadful to the say least, the food? outrageously bad. even though it was only $5 for non-members, a plate of tomato rice, two pieces of tandoori chicken (each the size of the mini mars bar), a crap load of cabbage and some weird spice just doesn't quite make sense.

throughout the night, the constant sound was that of people having their own conversations, that of the microphone's feedback and dare i say it, a bit of sneering and jeering too. all this with the high commissioner of malaysia as the guest of honor. so much for being at their best behavior. hah.

the table i was with had this obnoxious malaysian. he was on everyone's nerves, stealing food from the 'kitchen', snatching people's share of fruits and hogging of the cordial and ice water that was on the table. i snapped at him when he made a snide comment on singaporeans and our 'culture' of kiasuism. hey man, the singaporeans won a lot of prizes that night because we spent money to buy booklets worth of raffle draw tickets. if you are only going to buy ten as opposed to two or three hundred, does it not make sense that your chances are pretty slim comapred to the rest?

it was all in all a terrible night, the saving grace being the late night supper with a few friends, first heading out to gungahlin only to find that my favorite deep fried mars bar shop has closed for good before heading to belconnen to grab some fries and hotdogs.

back to the essay...

an excerpt.

thursday afternoon got this off the canberra times:

As the mother of two junior rugby forwards, the wife of a former prop and daughter of a one-time flanker, it is time for me to come to the defence of violent sports and the men who play them.

The attacks on former Footy Show star Matthew Johns, rugby league and men in general - branding them as dangerous predatory brutes who need to be chained, scolded and nagged into submission - have gone too far.

The initial criticism of Johns was warranted, after revelations last week that he and his Cronulla Sharks teammates, during a 2002 tour of New Zealand, engaged in a gang bang with a naive 19-year-old woman, who in the ensuing years became so distressed about her degradation she tried to kill herself.

But since then, Johns has been crucified, with demands he name his teammates, sponsors threatening to pull out of rugby league, a school principal banning NRL players from visiting classes and mothers stopping their sons playing the game.

You always know when zealotry creeps into a story there is another agenda at work - and that is that the Johns case is a beachhead in the war against masculinity, waged by those who think the only difference between men and women is cultural.

This notion of a socially constructed "gender" has been the central idea of the women's studies movement since it began in the 1960s, with its aim to produce an androgynous utopia. But the culture has changed and there are still men who refuse to act like women - damn them - even if they do have smooth, hairless chests.

Among the last bastions of traditional maleness, rugby league and other violent contact sports were always going to be in the line of fire. Sex scandals are their weakest points.

In the past week, with the Johns story the latest in a long string of such scandals, rugby league has been held up as an example of the worst of mankind, its attitudes leading to rape, domestic violence, war and general bad behaviour.

Thus, Roosters forward Willie Mason is stalked by cameras on a night out this week, so that a quick slash in an alley outside the Golden Sheaf in Double Bay becomes a monstrous crime, with pictures of him urinating behind a tree splashed all over newspapers and the internet, and his club hauling him before its disciplinary committee and fining him $2000.

No one enjoys the smell of urine in the street but Mason's discreet call of nature was hardly a capital offence in the scheme of things and at least he was wearing a nice suit.

Meanwhile, the Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, publicly defends the alleged drunken abuse of Thai police by a middle-aged Melbourne woman accused of stealing a beer mat from an Aussie bar in Phuket as just a little "fun in a bar". Imagine if she had been male and a rugby league player to boot.

Killing off rugby league isn't going to stop men being aggressive and sexually motivated. In fact, such games are the few outlets boys have left for excess physical energy.

In sanctioned team violence on the football field, young men can test their courage and express what it feels to be male, to have testosterone surging through young bodies, building huge muscles and attack instincts for which society has little use any more. It is teaching them, not to be violent but how to control their violent urges.

One of the best young rugby players I know, a gentle and confident teen, was once expelled from preschool and diagnosed by a teacher with attention deficit disorder because he had so much pent-up energy. Thankfully this later found expression on the football field rather than being drugged out of him with Ritalin.

The new androgyny has also expected that women, too, must change, particularly in their attitudes towards sex. Popular culture today presents a narrative in which the liberalisation of sex has travelled on an inevitable continuum from the 1960s to some Brave New World free-for-all where Huxleyan teens engage in clinical couplings in which the only things to be negotiated are safety and consent.

Where once girls were told that sex without emotional attachment would leave them feeling hurt and used, now such ideas are regarded as judgmental and moralistic. Instead girls are taught the most anti-woman thing of all - to judge their worth and the worth of others by "hotness" - that is, how sexually desirable they are, even if they are only 12.

The ensuing chaos in the mating world stems from this disconnect between what popular culture tells girls and boys they should want and how it really makes them feel.

In the end, men's drives aren't all violent and predatory. Most have a deep, possibly hard-wired, desire to be noble and chivalrous. That's why in situations such as the Port Arthur massacre, so many men died shielding their wives or women around them.

Chivalry was once the province of the fighting man - the knight in shining armour who behaved with gallantry, honour and courtesy on the battlefield and off and was always proud to help the weak and defenceless. But decades of androgynous feminism have stamped on chivalry, deriding men who opened doors or stood back for women as being sexist and patronising.

It would have been better for women if feminism had appealed to men's better natures.

aargh.

thursday morning someone give me a box of antacids. lomotil and buscopan supplies are running low. aargh...!

oh bugger off.

wednesday night let's put it this way, if you think the laws in singapore are harsh and inhumane, then piss off. when you're in a foreign country, you are expected to abide by that country's laws and regulations, why should exceptions be made just because you're a foreigner?

everyone knows about michael fay - the teenage vandal who was caned even after then-president bill clinton had appealed. and then now, in canberra, i'm watching a show called "just punishment" talking about how an australian citizen (ngyuen van) was hung for drug trafficking in 2005.

also, such is the world of politics that politicians always want to link one non-related incident and/or event to another. case in point: with the execution of ngyuen round the corner coninciding with singapore airlines' bid for a lucrative air route between australia and the united states, politicians lobbied for then-prime minister john howard to dismiss the bid.

secondly, the lawyers that represented the australian (one who happened to be a queen's council), crossed the line when they criticized the judiciary system of singapore by insinuating that singapore finds suspects guilty before being found innocent. not only that, he went on to say that PM Lee "had the cheek to say on the day of van's execution that it was the implication of the rule of law". fuck off you self-righteous bastard. of all people i'd expect lawyers and most definitely queen's councils to accept the ruling of a court of law and to respect another country's judiciary system.

just because you're repentant after being found guilty in a court of law, that does not absolve you of the original crime committed and as such, the punishment sentenced should still be carried out, especially if one has committed a capital offense.

in any case, it's just too bad for any offender. you committed an offence, you pay the price. whether or not the death penalty is legalized murder is another issue. the point is, if one cannot accept the laws, the culture and the country as a whole, don't come. don't you dare criticize and be all self-righteous about another country's laws simply because one happens to be more strict than another (and rightly or in this case, justly so too). the world can do with less people whingeing about things that they cannot control or do not have a say in and less people who claim to be the know-it-all and see themselves as an example of a person of high moral values.

Tommy Lee feat. Butch Walker - Good Times

Put down the magazine and get off the phone
Cuz theres a place I wanna show u and it wont take long
Take a ride
Take a ride

Its lookin like we're getting there
Over here, comin clear
Place that has no rhymes, or times, or crimes
Just good times
Just good times

Take me away
To a place where the good times good times roll
Don't let me stay
In a place where this hate can steal my soul

Got myself worked up over nothing today
All this trash is in my head I gotta throw it away
Its alright
Its alright

Its lookin like we're getting there
Over here, comin clear
Place that has no rhymes, or times, or crimes
Just good times
Just good times

Take me away
To a place where the good times good times roll
Don't let me stay
In a place where this hate can steal my soul

This is it, I'm finally here
And all the blurry lines are clear
And everything that I cant see
Seems to make more sense to me
Why the hell cant I just let it go, let it go, yeah

Take me away (away)
where the good times good times roll (roll)
Don't let me stay (stay)
where this hate can steal my soul

Let the good times roll
Let the good times roll (take me away)
Let the good times roll (take me away)
Let the good times roll

angels and demons.

sunday night came back not too long ago from watching the above mentioned movie. while i didn't quite enjoy it as i thought i would, i must say though, it was an interesting experience watching the movie.

more than a few times, thoughts did enter my head like "is the Church capable of such things" and things along that line. i had to constantly remind myself it was nothing more than fiction and that it was a show meant for entertainment.

that said, i disagree with people who say that it is "wrong" or "not right" for Catholics to watch the movie. what's wrong with watching the movie? this and da vinci code for that matter. while i can understand and even at times feel annoyed about the fact that dan brown used my religion as a basis for his novels, it's hard to fathom how people can come to take it as a fictional work based on "facts". does that now make it non-fiction?

i can only say, read the books and watch the movies as a neutral. appreciate the books for what they were - well-written and interesting. and even if somewhere along the lines "historical fact" did come into play, so be it.

~!@#$%^&*()_+

sunday afternoon if i ever find out who the people, going around smashing car windows/windshields, threatening my friends and causing them harm. i'll pummel your fucking face in. i don't give a shit if you're a girl, a guy, a tranny, a fag or a plain dumb shit. you're in for hell if i find you out.

We The Kings - This Is Our Town

Dear Bradenton
You have been good to me
You've kept your word
And got me through these years

And all I ask
Is that you'll be here
When i return
To share arms
In what we have learned
For so long these dreams were my own

Dear Bradenton
As the city sleeps at night
You found a siting of
Under parking garage lights
And you know
You know, you'll find us here
When we return
From Anna's Isle and east of here

This is our town
This is who we're meant to be
And this is our town
Where our roots have grown so deep
This is our town
This is where we're meant to be
This is our town
We'll keep coming back because
This is our town
This is our town
This is our town
What are we waiting for?
This is our town
What are we waiting for?

Dear Bradenton-
As I gently close my eyes
I hear you whisper softly
As we continue our goodbyes
And all I ask is that you'll be there
When we return

'Cause this is our town
This is who we're meant to be
This is our town
Where our roots have grown so deep
All I ask is that you'll be here
When I return

trekking.

wednesday morning no.. not trekking trekking but trekking as in star trekking. caught it just now with a couple of friends. i must say though, i never did get the idea of the original star trek series but this, this film changes it all for me. it was brilliant as far as i am concerned. i wouldn't mind watching it again but i think my next movie has to be wolverine before it ends.

amazing past couple of nights. dinner and supper trips haven't been this fun since i was back in singapore. you know who you people are. see ya'll soon enough.

sleepless nights.

sunday morning this week has been insane. haven't been sleeping earlier than 7am. blame it on the champions league and assignments. i basically went into hiding the whole week in my room, interviews at the international education office, floorball, multicultural ball and ssa stuff. the work is shit but strangely i'm enjoying it.

exam dates are out. and the look crap. on one hand it's good to have such a long time to be able to prepare but i just want it to be done and over with quickly.

16th - busn1001
17th - comp3110
25th - mgmt1003

floorball has been good so far. randeep has joined the team and is doing fairly well, apart from his finishing. haha.. i'm on a good run of form as well, scoring 3 and dishing out 4 assists. that takes me to 4G + 7A so far. not too bad i think. australian floorball open is coming up in july during the break so that should be exciting.

had a couple of birthday parties the past couple of days, amazing stuff. surprises galore and erm, indomee too. i think i have a phobia of indomee now. gah.

anyway, back to the readings. pfft.

arrogance.

friday morning the brits lost 179 personnel over the course of 6 years in combat operations in iraq. the americans, a lot more than that. yet the way bbc reports the end of operations in iraq by the british armed forces, makes it seem as if they have lost thousands of soldiers.

i can't help but to think whether or not this is a sort of remnant empirical snobbisness - the brits thinking they are still superior to others.

speaking of news. swine flu. who would have thought? the pigs are having their revenge on us. ha..
