transformers.

saturday morning just got back from watching transformers. it's a good show. well, more than a good show. it's a great show. at least for the fans of the original series. it does make a good attempt to draw the skeptics and converts too. apart from the visuals (that were beyond stunning on all counts, megan fox included) and a rather compressed plot, the movie, was a nostalgic adventure by itself.

if one had followed the original series and watched the animated movie, you'd be able to pick up the many references and dialogs from them. even optimus prime is voiced by the original actor who did it. the humor woven into the script may come off as cheesy but it comes together nicely. the cameos by various actors add a touch of comedy and familiarity to the whole show too (bernie mac and john turturro anybody?).

anyhows, enough of the movie-critic wannabe stuff. i just think that it's a great show. thoroughly enjoyed it though i must say the locals here didn't manage to pick up a lot of jokes. blame it on the translation or their lack of understanding of the enlglish language. some jokes are meant to be told in their original language, not translated. so there.

having a whole lot of rashes on both my legs, so am scratching a lot and it's getting quite uncomfortable. invasion of the mozzies and various insects. time to cover the room with mosquito coils. hah. have a good weekend all. mine just started out perfectly. well, almost.

backpacking.

friday morning think i've been saying i want to go backpacking since poly. money aside, i think deciding where to backpack is another problem. as it is, i might just do india all over. alternatively i might head down to australia early to scout around and get myself acquainted with wherever it is i decide to go to. ah. the workings of a straying and unfocused mind.

The 3SG Promise

thursday morning a little something i learnt in SISPEC. what we called "the third sergeant's promise".

If you forget my rank,
I will confine you.
If you screw up your drills,
I will issue extra duty to you.
If you give me attitude,
I will tekan you.
If you point your weapon at me,
I will kill you.
If you call me Sir,
I will confine you, give extra to you, tekan you and then kill you.

This i promise you.

winston (and anyone else enlisting for that matter), bear the following in mind.

A Sir is a Sir,
A Sergeant is a Sergeant.
A Sir is not a Sergeant,
A Sergeant is not a Sir.
I will not call a Sir a Sergeant,
And I will not call a Sergeant a Sir.

crashes.

wednesday damn it. broke another 3 rotor blades. maxed out the throttle and the helicopter when smashing into the ceiling. oh well. learning process is sure expensive. ha! in all i think i've used up 8 replacement rotor blades. costs around S$10 a pack (for 4) but still. it hurts. went to change the chassis as well. instead of a flimsy plastic cover, i've now got a hard plastic airframe. weight is more balanced and it's much easier to control now. so yeah. think i know what i'll be doing this weekend already.

which reminds me. siew suet lin! i will call on sat. find your braincells by then. if not. i think i'll need something to suppress all the laughter (and the cough that comes along with it).

oh lastly. Jack's Mannequin's 'Dark Blue'. happy song for happy people. the mtv's pretty nice as well. though i must warn, the end of the mtv is a bit cryptic. but still a nice song/mtv.

let it rip.

tuesday if only it were as simple as firing a rifle on full auto. to let go of all the emotions building up. the anger, frustrations, disappointments and other feelings that culminate in me being totally out of sync with what's been going on in the office and basically everything else. i'm pretty sure i know why i feel the way i do with regards to certain things but like i said, if only it were as simple as firing a rifle.

anyhows. got a new hobby. an expensive one too. bought a remote controlled helicopter. so that's one more thing off my list of wants. costs about S$140 but i decided to get spare parts and an extra battery just in case. wasn't surprised when i eventually had to replace all four rotors - two totally broke off when i flew the helicopter into the wall by accident. anyway, i didn't buy the traditional helicopter design (ie. main rotors and a tail rotor) - bought one that has no tail rotor.

so here, a basic background of helicopter aeronautics. because the main rotors produce a lot of thrust, it actually spins the whole helicopter around with it (if the rotors spin clockwise, the body will spin counter-clockwise) hence the need for a tail rotor to counter this spin.

the thing is, if you have two sets of main rotors, each spinning in the opposite direction, it eliminates the need for the tail rotor. the end result is a much more stable and slightly more powerful motor. thus my decision.

in any case, it's been a painful two days. it's crashed into walls, hit the ceiling and even smashed into a set of dumb-bells. but i'm getting a hang of it so it's all good. just need to go someplace with lots of open space to mess around a bit more. but since the weather has been so uncooperative, i'm limited to the confines of the living room and the 6th floor balcony.

well. nothing much else happening in this boring place. i must say though, i'm inching towards being "cheena-fied". i've almost forgotten how to think in english and that scares me. the scariest part though, is me being able to read and write traditional chinese (albeit a small bit but given my grasp of simplified chinese..it's an achievement all by itself). let's not even begin about the chinese songs. it's a nightmare.

silence.

sunday conversations. it's been a long while since i've been on msn so i haven't had any for a long while. in many ways it feels good, not being online to distract me from my work and stuff. what "stuff" encompasses i'm at a loss to explain but let's just leave it at that.

in any case. the week passed by pretty slowly as i anticipated. more so because i was ill and yet i had to work on my programming. was more frustrated at the high expectations and small window with which i had to work within. am i that good? i hope so. but i do need time to work on things too, more so now that i'm working on 3 programming projects at once. maybe dodging all those programming modules in poly wasn't such a good idea after all.

so back to conversations. it's been a pretty long while since i've had any with anyone. and in some weird way, i felt compelled to make a number of phone calls to certain people the past week. most importantly of course was calling back home. been a long while since i've done that. so i must apologise to my parents. i know my dad's been online waiting for me and i haven't been co-operative on my part. so yeah. sorry. hehs.

anyhows. calls were made. most were short chats, not more than 10-15 minutes. others were pretty long. up to an hour (or more?). specifically calls to chinx and sarah. more so because i needed advise about certain issues but that didn't limit the conversations to just that. ended up chatting for a long long time..

pardon me for the following rant. there are some things i just need to get off my chest. whether or not they're directed at anyone in particular i leave it up to you. my stand is, if you feel guilty or angry because of what i said, then maybe you are who i am referring to after all. agree?

so yeah. friends. we all have them. be it a small or large number of them i'm pretty sure we all have them. in any case, when things go wrong. the ones who stand by you are the ones who are really your friends. those who pick you up, encourage you and support you. they may not be there physically but their words, their text messages, emails, phone calls and tag board messages mean something. so all that's fine. but the disappointment comes when people who matter do neither. and knowingly so. that's what disturbs me. have i really trusted the wrong people? or have circumstances changed so much such that from great friends, we have degraded to this - being nothing more than just plain friends. worse still. they/you lie in my face about things. that's what i'll never accept. the lies, the masquerade that pretends to be a friendship. or maybe it's just me.

a couple of years ago, someone once described me as "vengeful yet deep down, has a great sense of loyalty and is a great friend to have". i still have the card. what struck me was not the loyalty and great friend bit. it was the word "vengeful". am i really? back in secondary school yes. i'll admit it. but now? perhaps. due to certain things that have happened. because of certain "friends".

for one, i am the kind of person who'll go all out to help people, to get things done and just be there for whoever it is. even if it's someone i resent, i will still help as best as i can. but having said that, i put myself at risk of being taken advantage of right? for example. i'm everyone's friend in the office. i shy away from the politics and everyone's smart enough to keep me out. i know too much about everyone to be on anyone's side but my point is. being friends with everyone is a hard task to keep up because then i'll have to put up with expectations, put up with rants and complaints. but what happens when the people i've trusted have let me down? or at least disappointed me? do i harbor ill-sentiments or just let it go. more so if we've been friends for so long. in some ways it's a betrayal of sorts. the huge disappointment i've felt and perhaps even disgust. how am i suppose to let it go just like that? gaining vengeance perhaps? so maybe i am still vengeful after all. for even thinking about it.

the thing is, there wouldn't be much point now would it? i'll do nothing more but cause more resentment and unhappiness. adding to the animosity isn't such a good idea even though it is very tempting. so for those friends that matter. thank you a whole lot. you know who you are. the ones who kept me going this past week. the 3 of you. the rest. well. disappointing doesn't quite cut it.

and to end this rather lengthy entry. everyone should go listen to bon jovi. really. especially their remade album "this left feels right" from 2003.

Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer

Once upon a time
Not so long ago

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck...it's tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
For love - for love

She says we've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

[Chorus:]
Whooah, we're half way there
Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin' on a prayer

Tommy's got his six string in hock
Now he's holding in what he used
To make it talk - so tough, it's tough
Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers baby it's okay, someday

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

[Chorus]

We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got

[Chorus]

calm.

tuesday afternoon that term is all too foreign right now. for a week off, there's a lot of programming to be done. too many expectations to be met but i think it's all cool. i'll get it done by next week.

antibiotics galore again. don't ask. coughing fit has reduced a lot but still hurts like hell when i cough. head spins too after a long while. so now i've got this whole week to recover if not i'll be in a whole lot of trouble next week when work picks up due to the monthly peak (work load is hell at the beginning and end of each month).

wrote a long email just now, sort of a rant/advise-needed kind of mail. i surprised myself by sending it to marilyn and sarah. well, sending it to sarah's alright since she pretty much knows what i was talking about. but marilyn. guess it's because it's been a long while since we spoke about "deeper" things. so yeah.

oh well, things fall into place one way or another. question i ask myself is, am i the kind who makes things happen and let things fall into place? or do i wait for things to fall into place before making things happen? i wonder.

sheesh!

sunday morning it's amazing how far anger can drive a person. and in this case, to flip the switch off a friendship. impulsive? yes. regrets? probably not yet. maybe in a few hours/days/weeks/months when i've simmered down and not get pissed off just thinking about what you did. maybe. so much for being a sensitive friend.

anyway. i think i coughed out my lunch, dinner and supper out all at once just now. this cough is getting so irritating that i vomit if i cough too much. and my throat still hurts though not as bad. so see how it goes. in any case, i give myself till monday to get well if not i'm headed for the doctor's again. bloody weather here is literally killing me.

oh yes. how could i forget. my boss's farewell dinner on friday was a blast. the whole office was at tainan seafood restaurant near shilin night market. and well, as all farewell dinners go in taiwan, alcohol was aplenty. and to put it simply, i was tested to my limits and i passed it with flying colors. consider this:
9 shots of Johnnie Walker Blue Label
5 shots of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, 12 year old vintage
8 shots of gao liang (something similar to vodka. average of 84% alcohol)
3 glasses of taiwan beer (which really tastes weird)
3(?) shots of unnamed whiskey
1 shot of taiwanese 深水炸弹 (essentially a shot of gao liang dunked into a triple shot of whiskey. it hits you only after 10 minutes or so on average)

so yes. i think i passed with flying colors and considering i am on duty, to be able to wake up at 8am to send out reports and stuff without a hangover, that's something man. and shit, maybe that's why i'm not recovering. haha!

sleepless (in taipei).

friday morning i have absolutely no idea why i'm up at this time. really. i should have collapsed from exhaustion 10 hours ago. but i'm still awake. perhaps it's the dry cough and sore throat that i have. the absolute refusal of the phlegm to come unstuck and be spat out. or maybe it's the mild but insuppressible fever that i've had the past 3 days.

in any case, been working on a project that i've been asked to do. so it's back to programming for me. thank God it's not Java or C++ but well, it's still programming and i hate it. i hate it because it gives me endless headaches and eyeaches. i hate it as much as i hate math (it's a mutual hate-hate relationship). my brain freezes just thinking of solutions or formulating codes to do what i want/need/have to do. i've amazed myself thus far, having not needed to refer to my pile of reference books that my parents brought over from singapore for me.

this week has passed pretty fast. but it's all so slow next week. considering that it's a full week off-in-lieu/block off for us all. i'm only taking friday off because i don't have enough leave/off to clear. and that isn't totally accurate. i do have enough leave. but that would mean that i can't come back in december. wouldn't want to disappoint those few special people now would i? so. i'll be in office working on this project of mine.

which reminds me. was chatting with winston the other night, talking about secondary school days. i think whatever we experienced then could and would definitely rival moulmein high (remember that show?) and perhaps even the o.c. (yeah right.). it's not as exciting or addictive as desperate housewives (eyes yeni) nor is it as draggy as a hong kong serial but! it'll still be a cool show to watch if it were to be made. a comedy-drama. yeah. think that's what genre it should be.

ok. what next. this post has numerous paragraphs that don't link with each other. talk about incoherence..

so to end a post with no flow whatsoever, a very big shout out to the following june babies (in order of date of birth that is)

julian. old man. 'nuff said. see you in december. (man pride.)
shuren. ah yes. happy 21st! commissioning and birthday all at the same time. can't get any better can it?
yeni. sweet (and sexy) birthday to you! whatever that should be said has already been said. so there. haha. hope you like and enjoy the "surprises"! see ya in 6 months!
manthu. bitch. now let's see you fly up to taiwan in october. ha! and i still want my NHL tickets. destination: denver, colorado. thanks!
giles. my 'lost' brother. happy 22nd! take care and good luck in sydney. i'll see you there soon enough and we can drive around in your mini-cooper. no wait. i can drive your mini cooper. ha!
delin. happy 21st to you too! sorry i couldn't make it for your chalet. and i promise. we will meet up in december k?
terence. 23rd and getting wiser i see. haha. looks like we'll meet up in australia then?
maryann. happy birthday! and no. no presents from taiwan unfortunately. haha..
tresa. my missing friend in US. take care aite? catch ya when you're back. happy 20th!
crystle. the studious turned model friend of mine. been a long time since we met but that doesn't mean i've forgotten your birthday. so there. happy 21st to you too!
winston. aha. 22 years old too. and army beckons. let me know if you need help. and yes. the film thing was a good idea. haha. happy birthday in advanced.

the one year soldier.

thursday well well. in a blink of an eye, 1 year has passed. 1 year in service in the army. it hasn't turned out as how i hoped it would but i can't say that it has been that bad as well.

looking at it, i guess i actually gained more. of course this is all said in retrospect. i would have felt otherwise at that point in time.

1 year on. the bunch of us in egarage have gone over many different paths. diverse and exciting as it may seem, we're still a bunch of good friends and i'm thankful for that. so here we are:

1 commissioned officer - combat engineer
1 officer cadet - infantry
3 third sergeants - intel, recce, artillery
1 sniper
1 rifleman
1 armor driver
2 police officers

much can be said about who's job is the easiest and all that but i think my hat goes off to fengnan for qualifying and then passing out of sniper school.

in any case, i never foresaw myself getting injured in NS. nobody did. i guess life has its own way of balancing things - we lose some, we gain some.

for instance, if it weren't for the injury, i wouldn't have been able to meet up with a certain person on the 23rd of december. nor would i have been able to know great pals like bertrand and james. i wouldn't have been able to do lots of things if it weren't for the injury and subsequent downgrade. a blessing in disguise? definitely.

i still hold grudges. not with the system but with the people. with the people who messed up my potential career, who pushed me to the ends of my limits in BMT (though in some ways i'm glad they did), people who basically were a pain. the lessons learnt and the experiences gained were and still are invaluable. the oath i took on the 8th of june 2006 - to defend singapore with my life - still holds true. and i'm proud of it. proud to wear the green uniform. to wear the green beret. with my LBV over my uniform and rifle in hand, i'll do whatever it takes. whatever it takes.

so here. 15 experiences in NS that have been unforgettable thus far:

1. being posted to Mohawk coy (Mohawk warrior...hmm..)
2. getting the chance to be platoon IC and then getting hell from my PC (unfairly or otherwise)
3. 24km route march. symbollic in every way
4. situational test with gary - my fellow spiderman
5. leading the 2 main missions for sit test and getting top marks for both
6. attaining m16 marksman
7. being assisgned SAW gunner in SISPEC (delta! delta! all the way!)
8. attaining p226 marksman
9. platoon fire movement with paintballs
10. being one of only 5 people in the coy to fire a 'live' MATADOR
11. seeing my target board "jump" up in the sky during M203 range - the one and only
12. getting posted overseas
13. meeting up with primary and secondary school classmates overseas
14. having a good laugh with my colleagues here thanks to airguns and a freaky spider
15. the plane crash

home.

sunday afternoon well. the short trip has reached it's end. leaving for the airport in about half an hour. i must say it has been fun and fulfilling in some ways. to have been able to meet up with so many people in such a short time and to have been able to spend time with a certain few who matter so much.

in short, it was worth every bit of it. but like all good things, it must come to an end. here's a shout-out.

chinx - hey jie. was good to see you even thought it was for that short 20 minutes. it still amazes me how we've been able to keep in touch for so long and still be talking like we just met yesterday even though it's been months or even years. december will be a blast.

mingrui/tim/james/nicholas/david/ang - was good to have met up with you all. the short time i spent with you guys in brigade was fun to say the least. but we all go our separate ways someday and well, have a good time while you're all still around. we'll meet up again.

gary - hey bro. thanks for the favors you did for me when i was in taiwan. great to have met you last night over martinis, dao huay and you tiao. haha! we'll drive around more next time. see you online.

shuren - hey sir. haha. ok. congrats on your commissioning. you've earned it. combat engineers and all. good luck with NDP and your eventual post as Dy S1. manpower work is interesting but monotonous. so yeah. try to have fun. catch you online bro. take care.

shaun/ben/ivan/zhixiong - thanks guys for meeting up for that short 3 hours in suntec. was good to see all of you again. so now i have more to thank you all for. for pulling me through poly and now this overseas posting of mine. hah! we need to meet up more often man. with or without shank. wenru and tianci must join us the next time round.

maryann - hey you. sorry that we met only for that short while. really am. plans didn't go according to how i saw it would so hence the cock-up. rain check! you take care and good luck with school and sailing. say hello to daryl for me when you see him aite?

and saving the best for last...

yeni - hey sweets. was great to have met you on more than one occasion. thursday was a surprise. friday was tremendous. saturday was for 40min but it felt like only 5. well. short as it may have been, it was really nice to meet up after 3 months. i guess december can't come soon enough eh? for now, hang in there. school, friends, family and everything else we talked about, well, it's part of the growing up process. learn from it, pick yourself up and move on. you'll have never-ending support and whatever else it may be from me and that's a guarantee. so yup. till december, you take care, stay safe and all the best with your exams. ilyl.

5 years and counting.

friday morning was home since wednesday night. you have no idea how this feels. to be back home in the company of my family, my friends and man, the food! in any case, been busy running around meeting up with people. but this post is not about what i did and all that. it's about a friendship of 5 years that i've had with someone.

arguably she was the one who pushed me and helped me get by many ups and downs in secondary school. always encouraging and being that gentle push when i needed one. the listening ear that was always there even though i rarely wanted to "use" it. she was an inspiration all by herself. watching her get through her troubles fluidly and gracefully. she. the girl that took my breath away for two years. two fantastic years. after knowing her for 5 years. nothing's changed. she's still how i remembered her as when things went awry between us. we hardly spoke since then but the past few weeks, things seem to have been back to normal. we're not as close as we used to be. we're both cautious, not wanting to cross the fine line between being close friends and getting into something more than that. no. not now. probably not ever but in her words - we've come so far and we just have to see where the future takes us.

that precious 1 hour plus we spent with each other at hong kong cafe was a nostalgic journey for us both. we reminisced about the past, the promises we made to each other (which we still keep) and just about everything we did. it all seemed like it happened just days ago, not 3 or 4 years a go. i am ashamed to say that i never did acknowledge her as someone who can be counted on, who has always stood by me and someone who never fails to put a smile on my face no matter how moody i am.

5 years on. the girl whom i met online. whom i met accidentally at a national day parade and yet did not know. the girl whom i walked home everyday for a year and a half. the girl who was and still is someone who'll always be one of the best friends in the world. and for better or worse, someone whom my heart will always be open to. for better or worse...

so here's a huge thank you to her for everything. just knowing her has been a tremendous experience and though we don't talk and meet up very often like we used to, perhaps then it's a result of an enduring friendship that has withstood many obstacles, physical and emotional. testimony to that would be how we went on and on without realizing the time.

to one of those who packed my parachutes..

the weekend.

sunday what a happening 3 days. seriously. all the shocks, the laughter and the crazy things we did in the residence. it all kicked off on friday night/saturday morning when our house had a power outage. so we were all running around trying to figure out how to turn the power back on until the taipower guy came. apparently the switchboard is in the basement. like what the hell?

and so saturday came. nothing much else happening except going out to do a bit of shopping, oakleys that cost a little more than 1/3 the price than in singapore, some tshirts and groceries. hunted for marilyn's camera as well. pretty quiet until...

sunday morning. housekeeper came, with us all in bed, she started vacuuming the place. got up and bummed around till the evening. went out to meet malvin together with james and shi en. went around playing those claw-grabbing prizes games (if anyone knows what i mean). caught a couple of stuff so it was pretty alright.

and for summer, it sure as hell rains alot and rains damn heavily too. what a spoiler. anyways, took a cab home and got pretty pissed with my upper-study for letting me 'discover' more shit he left behind for me to do. but either way, the shock of the week (perhaps even month) was to discover a spider the size of my palm, hairy legs and all (glances at marilyn and yeni. heh heh).

it was just above the headrest of my bed and stuck at the corner of the ceiling. funnily enough, jason thought that james and i bought a remote controlled spider from a night market and was playing with it.. until he realised that neither one of us were holding a remote control of sorts. and so began the comedy.

for guys who were trained to kill other people, trained to use sophisticated weapons, somehow we're not trained as to how to deal with palm-sized hairy spiders. the thought did cross my mind to use my airgun to shoot the spider but that probably would have caused a mess.

jason grabbed a tupperware that they used to store some durians and prodded alan to go catch the spider and he was like "what? just because i the highest rank ah?" and he burst out laughing. what the hell right? haha. by then the spider had ran across the ceiling to james's side of the room and was perched just above his pillow.

we used my floorball stick to direct it to the side of the wall and somehow it came "flying" down (more like fell off the wall?) and landed on james's bed. and for some strange reason, we all went crazy, burst out laughing and we all jumped away for fear of the spider attacking us (yes yes, what the hell..). but considering we were all wearing singlets/topless, you can imagine why. for combatants, we're surely afraid of one hairy spider. haha! ok. so was i. i mean. damn it. it was huge. like the size of my palm. if you include the legs it's definitely bigger. so yeah. and this time round i didn't have a rifle to smash the spider like how i did in BMT (when i dove for cover only to find a spider about 1/2 the size of my palm in my face. i drove the butt of my rifle into it and crawled on).

so now it's sitting inside the durian-smelling tupperware, in the living room. wonder what they plan to do with it. looking forward to wednesday. 2.30pm flight home. touch down at 7pm. and it's going to be a hectic rush to meet marilyn, maryann, james, serene and kieron all on wednesday night. i am positively in trouble. hoho. damn.

this left feels right.

saturday

this left feels right.
upon this trail we stand,
a product of the path we ran.

this left feels right.
from days gone by,
and weeks flying by.
this left feels right.

this left feels right.
with you almost out of my life,
to you i'd never lie.

this left feels right.
with you i thought it was,
but all it was, was just a fall.

this left feels right.
this silence you left behind,
a silence that seems alright.

this left feels right,
for what was given, and all that might.
this left feels right,
